 Sculpture and Lantern Workshops

Picture
Jan Davies
As part of the Queens Baton Relay event The Cassowary Coast Regional Council is partnering with Mission Beach Cassowaries and the Friends of Ninney Rise  to create large Cassowary Coast Creature sculptures to welcome the baton runners to Mission Beach on March 17th 2018.

The  artworks are being created at a series of workshops being held at Ninney Rise under the tutelage of well known art and drama  teacher Jan Davies.  Children and adults  are encouraged to work together on their projects with help from local artists  Sally Moroney, Nina Dawson, Penny Bell and Liz Gallie.

The creations will be paraded again at the 2018 Cassowary Festival's 'Drumming of Cassowaries'  parade on 30th June adding to the vibrant  cassowary sculptures made with a RADF  grant for last years even, also under Jan's guidance.

Plotting and Planning

STEP I:   Art and Drama teacher Jan Davies inspires artists to 'capture the spirit' of the creature they have chosen to create

STEP 2:  Loya cane is attached to bamboo frames to form the shape of the creature.

STEP 3:  Greaseproof paper (catering paper) is painted with glue (wallpaper) or for a more resilient  finish,
watered down PVA glue and placed over the loya cane shape or used to create a 3D profile.  If possible, placed in the sun to dry.

STEP 4:  Let the painting begin!

Now for the Lanterns
